Our ever-evolving world is vastly different from the one J. Willard Marriott, our late founder and namesake, experienced. However, his secrets for living well—centered on self-reflection, connection, and giving back—are as relevant today as they were when the first JW Marriott hotel opened more than 40 years ago.

“The JW Marriott brand really captures the soul of my grandfather in so many respects because it is a brand based around balance and wellness,” says David Marriott, Chairman of the Board, Marriott International, Inc. and J. Willard Marriott’s grandson. “Even though my grandfather was a workaholic, he still found time in his life to take care of himself.”

Whether he was enjoying the great outdoors, singing songs surrounded by family, or writing nightly in his journal, J. Willard Marriott made it a point to be present in and out of the office. Here, discover five of his personal practices worth adding to your wellness routine.

WRITE IT DOWN

Putting pen to paper was a source of strength and focus that helped our founder lead with purpose. “One of the things my grandfather liked to do was write in his journal,” says Debbie Marriott Harrison, Director of Marriott International, Inc. and J. Willard Marriot’s granddaughter. “Some days he would write two or three sentences…then there were other days that he would expand a lot on how much he appreciated the associates and the employees.” Journaling is the perfect excuse to pause, reflect on your goals and challenges, and gain clarity on what matters most. A Opens in a new windowrecent study suggests that setting aside 15 minutes to journal three days a week could help improve well-being and decrease mental stress.

HIT THE RIGHT NOTE

Music was more than entertainment for J. Willard Marriott—it was a source of joy, inspiration, and healing. “My grandfather really enjoyed doing things that kept him centered,” says Debbie. “We used to sing with him during car rides or walks in the woods. He had a great voice!”

GET OUTSIDE

From desert retreats to beachfront escapes, JW Marriott properties have always embraced the beauty of their natural surroundings. J. Willard Marriott was an advocate for spending time outside, understanding that nature holds the key to inner peace and vitality. “I think being in the outdoors had a calming effect on him and I think it helps you connect with who you are as an individual,” says David. “If he wasn’t on a horse, he was in the Jeep, boat riding, or walking in the woods,” adds Debbie. STRENGTHEN TIES

At the core of J. Willard Marriott’s life was a deep belief in the importance of relationships. He recognized that human connection—whether with family, friends, or colleagues—is essential for creating a sense of belonging and trust. “Family was really what was most important to him,” says David. “He always budgeted time to spend with family.” Create lasting memories and carve out uninterrupted time with loved ones by getting away. MAKE A DIFFERENCE

For J. Willard Marriott, living well also meant giving back. He believed that true success comes from helping others, whether through philanthropic efforts, mentorship, or simple acts of kindness. This ethos of service is at the heart of the JW Marriott brand, which remains committed to making a positive impact by supporting sustainability initiatives.
